Team Bio: Kennedy

Bourn Adventure and Bourn Adventure Gear Brand Ambassador | 2015
Picture
John Kennedy (or more commonly known as, Co-Commander Kennedy) graduated J. Frank Dobie high school in Houston with a Good Enough Diploma. At the time, he did not have much of a direction he wanted to take with his life. Kennedy spent time as a welder’s helper, carpentry helper, machinist helper and all around unmotivated individual who struggled to find what he really wanted to do for the rest of his life. Getting nowhere with the idea of an apprenticeship, Kennedy joined the United States
Army. While he did not find a job that really appealed to him, through the proper application of mentoring and a whole hell of a lot of push-ups, Kennedy did realize that the fear of the unknown had a major influence in his life, relationship and career choices. From that moment, he made a solid effort to accept challenges, especially the ones that scared the living crap out of him. Following his deployment to Iraq in ’03 – ’04 in support of Operation Iraqi Freedom / Enduring Freedom, Kennedy left the Army with an Honorable discharge. Due to his training and experiences in the military, it helped him accept all the challenges and opportunities life would throw his way.
After goofing off for a year or so post-Army, Kennedy received a message from a family member that a Sheriff’s Office in Louisiana was hiring. Realizing that he knew nothing about work as a cop, Kennedy recognized that this presented just the kind of challenge that terrified him as a child, so he went for it. Little did he know that being the po-lice (how South Louisiana people pronounce it) would not only affirm his experiment but reward him with levels of knowledge and a sense of purpose he could have only dreamt of before joining the Big Green Weenie (military term for the Army). Not only knowledge and a sense of purpose but also lots and lots of experience wrestling people that smelled like a combination of old cheese and that stuff that gets scraped out of your toenails during a pedicure (don’t judge him, I hear he gots clean feet, yo).

Kennedy spent five years as a Sheriff’s Deputy, during which he was a member in good standing with S.W.A.T., a member of Bicycle Patrol (don’t laugh, Bike Patrol was incredibly effective, and no they didn’t have streamers from the handlebars or training wheels) assisted Narcotics, Water Patrol, Directed Patrol and Criminal Patrol Units. Even though everything Kennedy experienced as a cop was fun, exciting and educational, he still felt constricted by the assumption that he would want to stay in the same place and do the same job for 20 years. After those five years, Kennedy left law enforcement to pursue other interests.

One that that happened during Kennedy’s time as a LEO that stuck with him even after he left was the friendship he struck up with Baker. For some bizarre reason, despite the obvious size and level of sanity difference, Kennedy and Baker found that not only did they share a common interest in movies, video games, humor and slightly burned steak, they also shared an urge to see what’s around the next corner.

One day, out of the blue, Baker called up Kennedy as he was in Texas being a rangemaster for some loony tunes dude that built his own range and asked him if he would want to go on a roadtrip, since another friend had sudden commitments that got in the way. Possibly breaking the Guinness Book of World records for “quickest decision made before hearing any detail,” Kennedy accepted the offer, told the range owner he was leaving and to try not to have any of his idiot friends shoot his next rangemaster, and booked a flight to Detroit, Michigan the very next day.

Over the next four years, Kennedy had much to do with Baker, his lovely wife Ashlie and Bourn Adventure. Nothing ever official, mind you. Just some weird, bald guy that didn’t have much to anchor him down to one particular place or profession and was a perfect candidate for a long-distance roadtrip that required either the patience of a saint to deal with Baker’s quirks, or an equally quirky quasi-hobo that was down for just about any kind of trip, as long as he managed to not get irritated with the management or employees and quit before saving up enough money to afford his part of the trip. To date, Kennedy has been a part of two large Bourn Adventure road trips (M-E.A.E.C.-15 and M-E.A.W.C.-16) that changed internet history.
M-E.A.E.C.-15 Road Trip
M-E.A.W.C.-16 Road Trip
All in all, Kennedy was a scared little bunny before he embraced the concept of Adventure. Once he did, life became two million times more scary, exciting, crazy, and wonderful than he would have possibly accepted if his present self would travel back in time to tell his past self. As a member of Bourn Adventure, he recognizes that his presence on this team is a direct result of that decision made long ago, a decision made of a distinct disappointment with the direction of supposedly “safe” choices that were in fact chains stronger than any metal of this Earth. Kennedy is a living, breathing example of how strength of character and a willingness to embrace uncertainty can lead you to a path of many great friends, fantastic places and enormous experiences.
When asked what advice Kennedy had for people seeking adventure, here is what he said:
" To anyone reading this, thank you for your attention. To anyone reading this with a decision hanging over your head, do yourself a favor and take the road less travelled. The road might get bumpy, but the destination is amazing and we here at Bourn Adventure would love to hear about it. "

Owner of Bourn Adventure and Bourn Adventure Gear | 2012
Chicago Cubs
Ashlie is a Registered Dietitian working out of Louisiana. She has a passion for animals, nutrition, travel, and a wide assortment of hobbies.

She is married to Baker
and they have a rather large fur baby.  Keira, their 110 pound, five year old Akbash mix, spends most of her days training to be a door mat. She is multi talented and proficient in the following: laying in doorways, stepping on feet, knocking over small children, and sleeping. In her spare time she works as a Therapy
dog, visiting nursing homes, hospitals, hospice facilities, and other places where she can best utilize her skills.

Ashlie, along with Baker, started what is now known as
Bourn Adventure in 2012. Before the rebrand to Bourn Adventure in 2017, the business was known as Bakes FJ, which focused on their adventures in the Toyota FJ Cruiser they owned. Their journey took them to all lower 48 states and parts of Canada. Unfortunately, while on a winter road trip they encountered a mighty snowstorm which led to the FJ Cruiser being totaled following an accident. To read that story, please click here: The Roll Over

Over the years their website and their adventures have grown. They have even added a 2017 John Cooper Works MINI and a 2005 Lexus GX470 to their fleet of adventure vehicles. They make a good pair traveling together as Ashlie helps cover up the odd smells and weird noises made by Baker.

Ashlie loves to travel and experience new places. Here is what she had to say about it:
" There is so much to see in this world and you only have one life, so YOLO! We  began by exploring the US, but have begun making plans to start traveling overseas. We have currently explored all of the lower 48 states twice and hope to make it a third time soon.  We created a business, Bourn Adventure, to document our travels, inspire others, and sell a few stickers and patches in the process. "
One of her passions is food. What started out as a love hate relationship has turned into a love affair. Here is what she had to say about nutrition:
" I grew up confused about what was healthy and ended up getting a degree in Dietetics to better understand the confusing world of nutrition. It was only after I graduated that I started diving into original research studies and uncovered the truth to a long, healthy life. And thus, Living Healthy was born! "

Ashlie has a long list of hobbies, which include:
  • Piano
  • Knitting
  • Crochet
  • Sketching
  • Gaming (WoW, Oblivion, ect)
  • Traveling
  • Cooking
  • Being a nerd
  • Motorcycling
  • Playing Magic the Gathering
Her goals are simple. She wants to share her adventures, along with sharing valuable health information that can help prevent cancer, potentially reverse heart disease, and increase a healthy life, tips from hobbies, and to learn from others. She hopes to bring new insights, knowledge, and perspectives with every post.

Design: Our Design Evolution

11/14/2018

The Bourn Adventure Gear introduction article explains the "why" we started designing and making stickers. This one will explain the "how". If you are not familiar with the "why" and want to read our history in terms of products, please click here: About Us: Bourn Adventure Gear

Initially, we started our sticker design work on an Apple iPad using a variety of applications. This worked, but not all that well. Although the iPad had been out for a little over two years at this point (late 2012) it could be challenging at times to get designs the way we wanted them and even more challenging to make changes later on if needed.

The majority of the applications we used then saved the source file as a Joint Photographic Experts Group (JPG or JPEG) or a Portable Network Graphic (PNG). Typically this would not allow us to make changes to the design later on since it was essentially a finished image without editable layers. If something needed correcting, we normally had to recreate the design from scratch.

Another issue of the file type was image resolution. Both JPG and PNG are what is known as raster files, which is made up of pixels. On smaller images or products like stickers, this is not too big of a deal. On larger things the resolution can be distorted and the image can appear pixelated due to the raster graphic.

At the time these issues were easy for us to overcome, but as we continued to grow and design more products, it was not efficient. We knew there were two directions we could go.
  1. Hire a graphics design artist to do all the work
  2. Start learning graphics design and purchase the appropriate software

The first option might be easier initially, but ultimately would be more expensive and could be challenging to convey our design ideas. The second option would be more work and require us to learn new software and develop new skills. The plus side is, I could drink coffee while doing it, so, there is that. #coffeeislife

With the help of articles, videos, and other tutorials, we transitioned to Adobe Illustrator (AI) for all of our design work. This allows us the opportunity to easily make changes or adjust the designs when needed. Another benefit to this program is it uses vector based graphics. This simply means a graphic is comprised of paths resulting in a cleaner graphic which is scalable in size without the distortion and pixelation found in a raster-based graphic.

Adobe Illustrator gives us options for file types. We can still save a design as a JPG or PNG if we want or can save it as an SVG (Scaleable Vector Graphic), PDF (Portable Document Format) or of course, as a Adobe Illustrator (AI) file, which typically is what we do as those file formats work best for printable designs.

To learn more about various file formats and how they are best used, please click here: 10 Types of Image File Extensions

By no means are we experts in this field and if we needed additional support for design work we would gladly hire a professional to assist us. At the end of the day, we are just hobbyists graphic designers who continue to grow Bourn Adventure Gear through our design work and drink too much coffee in the process. #coffeeisstilllife

Not only do we document our travels, but we also sell rad stickers, patches, and other products as a way to help others show off their adventures! Going to the mountains? We have a patch for that! Going camping? We have a sticker for that! Sun beating down on your head? You guessed it; we have a hat for that!

Since we launched our store in 2012, we have shipped products all over the United States and to more than 30 countries. To see all the places our products are in use, please click here: BAG Products World Map. We are blessed to have so many people around the globe rocking Bourn Adventure Gear. We wanted a way to personally thank them for their order.

Our solution was to create Bourn Adventure postcards. This allowed us the opportunity to give each order a personal touch while continuing to share adventures from all over the world. We breathe new life in our postcards by periodically changing destinations and showcasing new locations. Each postcard series is assigned a number and runs for a limited time. Once that particular postcard is gone, it is done!

So far all of the postcards have been a big hit and some people even started collecting them! Aside from that, customers have told us of conversations generated by the postcards hanging on their refrigerator or in their office. Hearing that something so simple could spark curiosity and encourage adventure brings a smile to our faces.

Baker spent approximately 11 years in the military as an Infantry soldier (11B). He did two deployments overseas before getting out of the service and receiving an honorable discharge from the United States Army with the rank of Staff Sergeant (E-6).

He also spent approximately 10 years in law enforcement and worked in several special operational units, to include: Narcotics, S.W.A.T. Team, Tracking Team, and Task Force Officer for the United States Marshals Service.
He left law enforcement with the rank of Sergeant (SGT) to pursue overseas work, which he still currently does.
Baker, along with his wife Ashlie, started what is now known as Bourn Adventure in 2012. Shortly after buying his 2012 Toyota FJ Cruiser he rediscovered his desire to travel. Initially, he set his sights on getting to know America better and launched a campaign he called, Explore America. Over the course of several years, he did just that!

Through the use of the National Park System, Museums, camping, hiking, off-road events, and other activities in various location across the United States, he truly has Explored America. Although he has visited all lower 48 states, some several times over, and more than 100 areas associated with the National Park System, he knows there is still so much more to explore within America's borders.

More recently he has had the opportunity to travel abroad. When possible, he has Captured the Journey at places like Petra, Jerash, Sinkhole Park, and Mt. Longonot, just to name a few. He has visited more than 30 countries, although not all of them were conducive to tourist activities.

Adventure in Kenya
Through his adventures around the world, he has had the opportunity to meet and interact with so many great people from all walks of life. He is a firm believer in never missing an opportunity to meet a new person and hear their story.

He knows not everyone has the financial or physical ability to Explore America or travel the world. Although these adventures are fun, his motivation for documenting them and providing that content to others via Bourn Adventure is personal.
Here is what he had to say about it:
" As recently as 100 years ago tourist travel was not a realistic option, especially across great distances. If someone wanted to see a new place, it was a true commitment filled with danger, high financial cost, and often times physical risk that the majority of people could not afford. The only other option was to read about such places in a book, but even that was not always a viable option as most people could not read well enough to comprehend what was between the covers. Not to mention, books, as we know them today, were not the norm then.

We live in an era now where travel is relatively safe, affordable, and quick. Today, the majority of people can take a trip without too much of a time or even life commitment as our means of conveyance has improved dramatically. We now have the freedom of movement that no other people in recorded history had. On top of that, the quality of life while traveling is so much better now than it was when a person was confined to the belly of an old wooden ship and tossed about while navigating the ocean or even on the back of an animal.

The majority of journeys then took several days, weeks, or even month to complete. Most people took them out of necessity, not desire. Today we can fall asleep comfortably in a vehicle and wake up several hours later in a new place; refreshed and ready to go. In terms of travel, what once took months to do, we can now accomplish in less than a day. In my opinion, we should seize this opportunity to travel and explore as people before us would have given their lives (some did), just for the possibility to experience a portion of what we can today.

Having said that, due to financial, physical or other reasons beyond their control, some people are still unable to travel. Fortunately, through the use of modern technology, almost anyone can explore the world through the internet.

One of our goals with Bourn Adventure is to bring a world of information and destinations to the fingertips of those who can not experience it on their own. We want them to travel through our adventures and live through our stories.

We also aim to act as a resource for those who are planning their own trips, whether it be domestic or international. Our hope is they can use the information we have gathered and the content we have created as a guide to help them identify places to visit. "

Products: Vinyl Decal Installation

5/28/2018

Vinyl stickers are very durable, low maintenance, and long lasting. They can be placed on just about any surface (metal, plastic, glass, small children, ect), but some finesse is required when applying the decal. It is recommended that the surface is free of dirt, grease or other debris before installation. We like to use rubbing alcohol to clean the area before placing decals on our vehicles. Lastly, we recommend not scrubbing directly on the decal with a cloth or other material used when washing your vehicle. Although these decals are durable, they can be damaged, especially around the edges or smaller detail areas.
MINI Cooper decals and stickers

Installation

  1. Clean and dry the surface
  2. Peel the paper backing off, leaving the decal on the application tape
  3. Apply the decal, starting from one side and working to the other
  4. While the application tape is still on, take a flat object (credit card, drivers license, ect) and rub it over the decal. This helps remove possible air bubbles and allows the decal to adhere better to the surface
  5. Remove top application tape
  6. Stand back and admire the awesomeness!
