To all the brave men and women wearing any type of first responder uniform who serve communities all across this great nation, we here at Bourn Adventure would like to thank you for your endless service. We know the job is not always easy, but we also understand it is necessary. As a former member of law enforcement who worked alongside Firefighters, EMS and other specialized personnel, I can relate to the difficulties faced and sacrifices made to ensure that communities and their people are taken care of in times of need. My time as a first responder was made easier by companies who helped us out by offering great products at a discounted price. Now that I run my own business, I want to do the same thing. Bourn Adventure Gear is more for entertainment purposes than real-world practicality. Having said that, we understand how important it is to have something tangible that can bring a smile to you or your friends face before, during, or after operating in hostile environments or to help break up the daily grind of the job. We hope that Bourn Adventure Gear can do just that and as such, we would like to extend you a discount on your purchase. At checkout, enter discount code FirstResponder15 for 15% off your entire order (before shipping). We work on the honor system, therefore, you do not need to prove service to be eligible for this discount. Lastly, this code is good for each and every time you place an order! get for being really good with a mop and not being directly responsible for setting things on fire, Kennedy decided that he could more effectively be a force for laziness as a Pizza Hut driver, so he left the Army for the coveted position of delivering pizzas and finding out first-hand that porn movies have been lying their butts off for years. To date, Kennedy has visited 34 states and 9 countries. He enjoys rappelling, things that go pew pew, and traveling. He has been the Co-Commander for two Bourn Adventure road trips, one to the east coast and one to the west coast. Army. While he did not find a job that really appealed to him, through the proper application of mentoring and a whole hell of a lot of push-ups, Kennedy did realize that the fear of the unknown had a major influence in his life, relationship and career choices. From that moment, he made a solid effort to accept challenges, especially the ones that scared the living crap out of him. Following his deployment to Iraq in ’03 – ’04 in support of Operation Iraqi Freedom / Enduring Freedom, Kennedy left the Army with an Honorable discharge. Due to his training and experiences in the military, it helped him accept all the challenges and opportunities life would throw his way. After goofing off for a year or so post-Army, Kennedy received a message from a family member that a Sheriff’s Office in Louisiana was hiring. Realizing that he knew nothing about work as a cop, Kennedy recognized that this presented just the kind of challenge that terrified him as a child, so he went for it. Little did he know that being the po-lice (how South Louisiana people pronounce it) would not only affirm his experiment but reward him with levels of knowledge and a sense of purpose he could have only dreamt of before joining the Big Green Weenie (military term for the Army). Not only knowledge and a sense of purpose but also lots and lots of experience wrestling people that smelled like a combination of old cheese and that stuff that gets scraped out of your toenails during a pedicure (don’t judge him, I hear he gots clean feet, yo). Kennedy spent five years as a Sheriff’s Deputy, during which he was a member in good standing with S.W.A.T., a member of Bicycle Patrol (don’t laugh, Bike Patrol was incredibly effective, and no they didn’t have streamers from the handlebars or training wheels) assisted Narcotics, Water Patrol, Directed Patrol and Criminal Patrol Units. Even though everything Kennedy experienced as a cop was fun, exciting and educational, he still felt constricted by the assumption that he would want to stay in the same place and do the same job for 20 years. After those five years, Kennedy left law enforcement to pursue other interests. One that that happened during Kennedy’s time as a LEO that stuck with him even after he left was the friendship he struck up with Baker. For some bizarre reason, despite the obvious size and level of sanity difference, Kennedy and Baker found that not only did they share a common interest in movies, video games, humor and slightly burned steak, they also shared an urge to see what’s around the next corner. One day, out of the blue, Baker called up Kennedy as he was in Texas being a rangemaster for some loony tunes dude that built his own range and asked him if he would want to go on a roadtrip, since another friend had sudden commitments that got in the way. Possibly breaking the Guinness Book of World records for “quickest decision made before hearing any detail,” Kennedy accepted the offer, told the range owner he was leaving and to try not to have any of his idiot friends shoot his next rangemaster, and booked a flight to Detroit, Michigan the very next day. Over the next four years, Kennedy had much to do with Baker, his lovely wife Ashlie and Bourn Adventure. Nothing ever official, mind you. Just some weird, bald guy that didn’t have much to anchor him down to one particular place or profession and was a perfect candidate for a long-distance roadtrip that required either the patience of a saint to deal with Baker’s quirks, or an equally quirky quasi-hobo that was down for just about any kind of trip, as long as he managed to not get irritated with the management or employees and quit before saving up enough money to afford his part of the trip. To date, Kennedy has been a part of two large Bourn Adventure road trips (M-E.A.E.C.-15 and M-E.A.W.C.-16) that changed internet history.
All in all, Kennedy was a scared little bunny before he embraced the concept of Adventure. Once he did, life became two million times more scary, exciting, crazy, and wonderful than he would have possibly accepted if his present self would travel back in time to tell his past self. As a member of Bourn Adventure, he recognizes that his presence on this team is a direct result of that decision made long ago, a decision made of a distinct disappointment with the direction of supposedly “safe” choices that were in fact chains stronger than any metal of this Earth. Kennedy is a living, breathing example of how strength of character and a willingness to embrace uncertainty can lead you to a path of many great friends, fantastic places and enormous experiences. When asked what advice Kennedy had for people seeking adventure, here is what he said:

We don't just design adventure based products, we live them! -Bourn Adventure Gear One of the more common questions we are asked is, "why do I need to pay $4.00 in shipping for a $0.55 stamp?" This is a great question, unfortunately, the answer is not as straightforward as the question itself. In my opinion, creating and justifying the shipping cost for a product or products is one of the more challenging customer service obstacles for a business to overcome. Before explaining our shipping costs, let me say this; there is no right or wrong answer on this topic, only what seems to work best for a business and their customers. For instance, an online retail store that is similar to ours might have a different shipping policy and fees associated with orders. Although similar, each business is unique and as such, the operational needs and costs associated with them are different. In short, what works well for one business might not for another. Shipping Cost ExplainedOur preferred means of order delivery is the United States Postal Service (USPS). When you factor in shipping supplies (envelope, tape, labels, ect) along with the actual postal service delivery charge, the cost of shipping just one order far exceeds the cost of a stamp. Also, when we send a customer their order it ships with a USPS tracking number, which is something you do not get with a stamp. As a small business, it is not in our best interest to absorb the full cost of shipping each order, especially over the course of a year. This year alone we estimate the cost associated with shipping will be in the neighborhood of about $8,000. This left us with two options.
Free shipping worked out great for our customers who ordered just one product because the additional cost was still cheaper than a shipping charge. The customers who ordered two products seemed to break even, and the customers who ordered three or more items were spending more money on the additional product cost than our current $4.00 flat rate shipping charge (good for us, bad for the customer). Upon further investigation, we noticed the vast majority of our orders contain three or more products, especially as our business and product line continues to grow. On larger orders, the $4.00 flat rate shipping charge does not always cover everything, and we pay the difference. We entertained the thought of charging customers based on ordered weight, but even that was not always accurate. Lastly, we looked at raising the shipping cost to $7.00 on all orders to cover shipping overages, but that would hurt customers who had smaller orders. In the grand scope of things, orders, where we paid the overage, is minuscule compared to all orders received, therefore it did not justify the additional charge across the board. Ultimately we found a middle ground and did what we felt was best for our customers and Bourn Adventure Gear regarding product pricing and shipping. Although it is now more expensive to ship products via most carries, to include the United States Postal Service, we have not raised our shipping price. We currently absorb the newly raised prices and hope to continue to do so that way our customers do not have to. This is somewhat of a lengthy explanation, but we hope it helps. Typically, this is not explained to people and sometimes leaves customers under the impression that shipping charges are just another way for businesses to make more money. We like to be open and honest about why we do what we do as a company, which is why we go a little more into depth with customers regarding this and other topics. Thank you for reading this article. We don't just design adventure based products, we live them! -Bourn Adventure Gear If you are not familiar with our beginning, please read our story by clicking here: About Us: Bourn Adventure Gear We ventured into the patch world thanks to boredom, a cold beer, and our Toyota FJ Cruiser, which was parked in the driveway, waiting for history to unfold. One day while I was going through some of my military gear I stumbled upon my old unit patch from my first deployment with the 25th Infantry Division. Brief sidetrack! In 2004 my unit wore the Desert Camouflage Uniform (DCU) which required our patches to be sewn on. Shortly after arriving in Iraq, some of us began field testing what was known as the Close Combat Uniform (CCU) which was an improvement on the DCUs we were issued. One of the new features with the CCUs was the ability to attach patches to the uniform using velcro. The CCU was later phased out for the Army Combat Uniform (ACU), which is currently in use along with the Operational Camouflage Pattern (OCP).
I immediately realized this was why I was put on the earth; to show the human race that patches were rad again. This does not work on all vehicles, but the Toyota and Lexus headliners are Velcro friendly. Occasionally, a patch will drop from the roof and land on someone in the vehicle. Usually when this happens, it scares the ever living crap out of whoever it hits! This led Ashlie and I to have an interesting conversation about those experiences following the roll over in our Toyota FJ Cruiser, which at the time had about 70 patches on the headliner. - Ashlie: "Remember when we'd be driving the FJ and a patch would randomly fall from the roof and scare the crap out of us?" - Me: "Do you think we scared the crap out of the patches when we rolled the FJ and fell on them?" To read our article about the accident in the FJ, please click here: The Roll Over
What started as a cool way to display our designs and adventures has now grown into a large market filled with creative and talented makers. Although our patches were initially marketed to Toyota owners for use on their headliners, we have now expanded our design spectrum to include a wide variety of themes. People all over the world rock Bourn Adventure Gear patches on their jackets, bags, hats, hiking equipment, photography equipment, camping gear, tactical vests, vehicle headliners, and much more. We have physically carried our patches with us on adventures all over the world. They have traveled to places like Petra, Zion National Park, the Dead Sea, Arches National Park, Wadi Tiwi, and Niagara Falls, to list a few. To us and many other people, our patches are more than just designs, they are a lifestyle!
