Bourn Adventure Gear started as Bakes FJ Gear in late 2012. It was Bourn out of necessity for Toyota specific stickers and later patches (read our: Patch Story). At that time, it was difficult locating unique stickers or decals that were Toyota or off-road themed, so we began to make our own. One of our first designs was the Challenge Accepted sticker, followed by our My Toyota Rocks! sticker, which paid homage to the 1980's Toyota colors made famous by racing legend Ivan "Iron Man" Stewart. I remember the yellow, orange, and red colors splashed across the Toyota race trucks when I was younger but did not truly appreciate them until getting our FJ Cruiser.
Those three colors mean a lot to me and influenced many more unique Toyota themed designs to include: Toyota Mountains, Desert Yota, Toyota Sunrise, Retro Capture the Journey, and Toyota Action. The idea then was to make stickers just for us. We did the design work in house and outsourced production to another business online. Just like most companies, there was a minimum amount required for production. Since we only needed one or two stickers for ourselves, we decided to give the extras away to our friends in the Bayou State Land Cruiser Association (BSLCA), sister Toyota clubs or other off-road related communities. At the time, we had no intention of making additional production runs of designs as this was more for us. After handing out all of our extra stickers people started contacting us asking if we could send them some too. Flattered by all the requests, we obliged and made more, which we mailed out for free. We did not anticipate what would soon follow. More and more people reached out to us asking if they could have or even purchase stickers and when new designs would be available. Luckily for us, we already had BakesFJ.com (our FJ Cruiser travel blog) and all that was needed on our end was to add an online store section which we called Bakes FJ Gear. We continued cranking out new designs and operating under Bakes FJ Gear for several years until we rebranded in 2017 to Bourn Adventure and Bourn Adventure Gear following a roll over in our Toyota FJ Cruiser. Shortly after that, we separated the two websites, allowing them to grow and operate independently. To read the story of the accident in the FJ, please click here: The Roll Over
We also started a Bourn Adventure postcard series which is included with every order. Each postcard series showcases a beautiful picture on the front from one of our adventures and brief description of the journey on the backside. More importantly, it allows us the opportunity to personally connect with each individual who places an order. To learn more about our postcards, please click here: Postcard Adventures We now have over 250 product options available in our store, which covers a wide variety of design themes, to include: adventure, freedom, tactical, ect. Our goal is to continue to create great products that are enjoyed and used by people all over the world. A Toyota ('82 Celica) was my first car and it gave me my sense of freedom. Many years later, a Toyota ('12 FJ Cruiser) gave me my desire for adventure! We have designs now that pertain to everything, but our inspiration is still driven by those beautiful Toyota colors. If you are not familiar with our beginning or why we started designing stickers, please click here: About Us, Bourn Adventure Gear That article goes into detail about our history with stickers and what influenced a lot of our designs. What it does not cover is how our stickers and decals are designed, made, and installed, which we will talk about here. You may have noticed, I separate the words sticker and decal. They are both made from vinyl, but the design work, production process, and finished product are different between the two, which is why we refer to them differently. DesignFor our stickers as well as other products, we use Adobe Illustrator (AI) which is a vector based software. If you are not familiar with that program, please read our design article here: Our Design Evolution. For our decals, we use Graphtec Studio, which is the native software for our Graphtec cutting plotter. Depending on the design and detail, the graphic might look better as a multicolor sticker or as a single color decal. Sometimes we use the same design for both a sticker and a decal like we did with the My Toyota Rocks! design. StickersMost of the design work is done in-house, but we outsource sticker production to an online company which we have used for many years. Our multicolor stickers are printed on premium vinyl which allows for rich color and extensive detail. Each sticker has a permanent adhesive backing and is sealed with a protective laminate. Due to the production process, each sticker is extremely durable and can withstand exposure to sunlight, wind, and rain. We personally have ran our stickers on our Bourn Adventure vehicles for several years without fading, scratching, or peeling. DecalsAll of our design work and production is done in-house on our Graphtec cutting plotter. Our single color decals are made using high-quality vinyl which is designed for both indoor and outdoor use. The vinyl is extremely durable and has a life expectancy of 3-5 years depending on the environment and care. The vinyl itself has an adhesive backing which allows for placement on most surfaces. Once applied, it can withstand exposure to rain, wind, dirt, and sun. For additional information regarding installation and maintenance of our decals, please read our article here: Vinyl Decal Information We personally have ran our decals on our Bourn Adventure vehicles for several years without fading, scratching, or peeling. InstallationLike we mentioned, our stickers and decals can be placed on just about any surface, inside or outside. For the most part, installation is as simple as:
Additional considerations for cleaning the surface. Typically, alcohol works best (not beer, whiskey, or wine...that's for you). This helps remove any dust, dirt, grease, or other debris before placing the sticker or decal on. Additional considerations for installation. Typically, starting on one side of the sticker or decal and working your way to the other helps prevent air bubbles from becoming trapped underneath. If any are present after installation, using a flat object like a credit card and running it over the surface of the sticker or decal can help push the air bubbles to the edge. However, this technique could damage the product. MaintenanceNormally the stickers and decals themselves require little to no maintenance. This refers more to the area where they are applied. When cleaning your vehicle or other surfaces on which you have placed a sticker or decal, try to avoid vigorously scrubbing on top of it. Direct contact like this could lead to portions of the sticker or decal potentially pealing up or being removed. This is more of a concern with decals rather than stickers as the decals tend to have smaller, exposed details. The JourneyWe love stickers and decals because of the places they go and stories they tell. They can be put on computers, tool boxes, vehicles, walls, windows, lunch boxes, small children, and just about anything else. With over 150 sticker and decal options available in our store, there isn't a situation or place one of our "stickables" can't relate to. We want our products to outlast your adventure, which is why we continually do research and development on all Bourn Adventure Gear. We even rolled our Toyota FJ Cruiser for sticker and decal product testing and guess what? They stuck! Thank you for reading this article. We hope you found it entertaining. Bourn Adventure started as Bakes FJ which was a small business built around our 2012 Toyota FJ Cruiser. While owning the FJ, we traveled to all lower 48 states and parts of Canada on several different road trips (some more than 10,000 miles long), attended numerous off-road events, and met thousands of people along the way. Our Toyota FJ Cruiser was simply named "The FJ" and gained popularity in the off-road community due to our travels, pictures, and a few silly videos we put out. Sadly, the FJ was totaled in January of 2017 after I put her belly up on a snow-covered road in Oregon.
Ashlie and I decided we did not want the roll over to be the end of our story or the end of Bakes FJ. In fact, we wanted to start a new chapter! Bourn Adventure is just that. Since the rebrand, we have expanded our travels, website, and are working on new and exciting places to visit. The name has changed, but the adventure remains the same! One of the definitions for Bourn is, "a goal or destination." We figured that paired well with our adventurous spirit and desire to share experiences with others. If we can influence just one person to explore the world around them, we accomplished what we set out to do. If someone can not physically take an adventure, then we hope they can see the world through us. To date, we have traveled about 110,000 miles just on road trips within the United States and many thousands of miles more internationally. Some of our adventures include seeing natural beauty at places like: Grand Canyon National Park, Arches National Park, and Acadia National Park. We have also visited man-made areas like Petra and Jerash (both in Jordan) that date back thousands of years. To see pictures of our adventures all over the world, please click here: Travel: Our Adventures Our goal is to continue to grow our collection of places visited across the world and deliver that content to you via our website, social media pages or emails. Although there is a world of information on the internet, it is not always easy to navigate. Our hope is; by using information found on our website it makes your next adventure that much easier to plan, execute, and enjoy.
